Astronomy Concepts for the Classroom Teacher. Northern Stars Planetarium is now offering a two and a half hour workshop for teachers grades K-8 on teaching astronomy in the classroom. The workshop is divided into two sections, each one hour and fifteen minutes long. Section 1 offers hands-on activities that teachers can take directly back to their classrooms to get their students involved in the discovery of the sky, the solar system, and the stars. Section 2 takes place inside Northern Stars Planetarium's Super Dome portable sky theater. Here we will concentrate on learning the night sky, stars, constellations, and visible planets. We believe that to teach well, one must be comfortable with the subject first, so part 2 is directed toward helping the teacher expand his/her knowledge of the skies.

Length: 2.5 hours (If you have specific time constraints, give us a call, we're adaptable.)

Where: At your location, we need a 30' by 30' space for the planetarium, a gymnasium works nicely.

Understanding and Teaching Astronomy in the Classroom. This 90 minute workshop presents numerous hands-on activities that the teacher can easily manage within the classroom environment. We will do as many of these activities during the workshop as time allows. We will also discuss local and national astronomical resources. This workshop does not require the planetarium.

Constellation Workshop. This is a 90 minute workshop is presented within the planetarium. It concentrates solely on understanding the night sky and constellations. You will learn about circumpolar constellations and why they are visible year round, while southern constellations are seasonal. You will learn how the sky moves and how the constellations change with the seasons.
